DAVIS, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's golf team battled the elements in round one of the 2026 El Macero Classic on Friday and found themselves in a tie for sixth place at 5-over-par and just two strokes out of the top three.
Heavy showers plagued the early holes in the morning, but after the rain cleared, the 19-team field was able to get in all 18 holes of the first round. Saint Mary's hung around even par for a good portion of the front nine, but tallied just five birdies over the team's first nine holes, putting them on the outside of the top-10.
Despite the slow start, Saint Mary's got a couple of crucial birdies from Aidan Lee and Inigo Izuzquiza on the 18th hole to push the Gaels into a tie for sixth place at the end of day one. Lee, along with teammate Avery Lazarski, were the team's low finishers of the day with rounds of even par, while redshirt freshman Sam Baumuller was the other counting score for the Gaels with a 74 (+2). Another big swing for the Gaels came on the par-five 15th as they shot a combined 4-under to add to their score late in the round.
Fellow West Coast Conference member Pacific leads the tournament field at 4-under-par and is the only team in red figures after day one. The Gaels are just two strokes out of third and four strokes out of second place with 36 holes to play.
