WSOC | Milner Earns Third Shutout in Draw Against LMU

The Gaels displayed their strong defense on Friday as they held LMU scoreless, picking up their fourth third shutout of the season.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (5-4-1) played a hard fought match on Friday afternoon against the Loyola Marymount Lions (2-6-4) with a number of close shots taken, but eventually settled with a 0-0 tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels began the match against the Lions on Friday afternoon in a largely defensive fashion. Both teams combined for only six shots in the first half, including a shot off the crossbar from SMC's Vanessa Gaitan in the 32nd minute of the match.

It was a busy game for the goalies as Saint Mary's Maleah Milner and LMU's Charlee Pruitt both recorded the shutouts for their teams and collected a total of four saves each. Milner's best save came in the 54th minute when she made a diving stop to preserve her third shutout of the season.

Saint Mary's nearly broke the scoreless tie early in the second half as Jordyn Cunningham's 49th minute shot went just outside the post. Sophie Santos also had a golden opportunity in the 78th minute on a breakaway shot that bounced off the crossbar. The Lions' Skylar Robledo had a close shot of her own in the 80th minute, however it sailed just high over the top of the goal.

The first overtime period saw a flurry of early shots on goal by the Gaels. Jaylen Crim nearly scored just 25 seconds after the period began and Kailana Kaeo took advantage of a short goal kick and fired another shot just wide less than a minute later. The Gaels had a solid defensive effort in overtime and only allowed the Lions to take one shot after regulation.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "This was the seventh overtime so far for us. They drew on those experiences and created several chances to win the game. We played hard today, we will train tomorrow and ready for Pepperdine."
  • "I thought our team pressed hard and created turnovers in the midfield. We just need to work on converting them into goals."
