MSOC | Defense Stands Tall, Rudel Scores in 1-0 Win Over Dons

No. 13 Saint Mary's remained perfect in conference play after picking up a win over USF on Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO — No. 13 Saint Mary's kept the ball rolling Saturday night in San Francisco as they improved to 12-1 on the year and 3-0 in West Coast Conference play. The Gaels have now won 31 of their previous 34 matches dating back to 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's defense dominated the Dons all night by allowing only four shots and just one in the final half. Goalkeeper Remi Prieur made two saves in net to pick up his eighth clean sheet of the season.

Jake Rudel got the Gaels off to a quick start by notching his fifth goal of the year in only the second minute of action. Off a corner kick, the senior got hold of a loose ball and fired a rocket into the upper left corner for the go-ahead tally. The goal proved to be enough for the Gaels as the defense closed the door for the remaining 88 minutes of play.

Rudel nearly scored his second of the match in the 24th minute but his curling try from 15 yards out went just wide of the right post. Shortly after in the 32nd minute, Filippo Zattarin took a free kick that was headed for the top right corner but Dons' keeper Reuben Stuiver made an impressive diving stop to keep SMC's lead at one.

All told, Saint Mary's finished the match with 14 shots and eight total corners. USF committed 16 fouls to the Gaels' 13 and SMC was also called for two offsides in the match.
