MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels will play their last two regular season games of the year this week as they look to face Pacific on Friday and 7:00 p.m. and then San Francisco on Tuesday also at 7:00 p.m.
SCOUTING REPORT
Saint Mary's had a difficult time on the road last week as they dropped matches to both Pepperdine and LMU. The Gaels put up a strong effort in Saturday's match against the Lions as sophomore Breyan Ashley (14 pts), senior Sienna Young (11 pts), freshman Elena Baka (10 pts), and senior Aubrey Pitts (10 pts) all recorded double-digit points while Baka (14 digs) and Ashley (11 digs) both collected double-doubles in the match as well. Pitts was strong defensively during the contest also as she recorded a season-high, five block solos through four sets and ended the match with eight total blocks which ties her previous season-high.
SMC remains in the stats rankings for the fifth week in a row as the Gaels are ranked third in the conference and 53rd in the nation in blocks per set (2.44) while also being ranked fourth in the conference in opponent hitting percentage (.207). Individually, Alexsa "Crash" Parker is ranked first in the conference and 26th nationally in aces per set (0.46) while teammate Ashley is ranked ninth in the WCC in the same category (0.34). Pitts is ranked second in the conference and 16th in the country with 1.38 blocks per set and senior Alex O'Sullivan is ranked just below her at fifth in the conference with 1.13 blocks per set. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Knudsen also remains in the rankings this week as she is seventh in the conference for total digs on the season with 304.
PACIFIC
The Tigers have a record of 13-15 at this point in the season and they are 5-11 in WCC-play which has them ranked eighth in the conference. Pacific has lost six of their last seven matches with their last win coming on November 9 against the Portland Pilots. The Tigers have been on the road for their last two matches, but will be returning home, where they have a 2-6 record, for their game against Saint Mary's. Pacific has conference wins against San Francisco, Gonzaga, Portland, and SMC. The first time the Gaels and the Tigers met this season, the two teams went to five sets but it was Pacific that prevailed in the first game of conference competition. Historically, the Tigers hold the advantage over the Gaels (11-5), but the teams are 3-3 against each other in their last six meetings.
SAN FRANCISCO
The San Francisco Dons are 7-19 overall this season with a conference record of 3-12. The Dons are ranked last in the conference and have only taken wins against Gonzaga, Santa Clara, and Portland. San Francisco has been swept in eight of their matches this season including during their first meeting with SMC on October 26. The Dons won their most recent match against the Pilots 3-1 which snapped a three-game skid that began on November 7. USF is 5-6 at home this year and will be returning from a roadtrip to the Northwest to take on Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine at home prior to their match against Saint Mary's. The Gaels and the Dons have met many times over the years, but SMC holds the winning record (39-26) all-time against San Francisco.
