STOCKTON, Calif. — Saint Mary's defense stepped up Thursday night to stunt the Pacific offense and give the Gaels their ninth WCC win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jordan Ford was once again the main storyline of the game with a 28 point performance to lead all players. The Folsom, Calif. native was 4-for-7 from deep and 11-of-20 overall. Ford, the conference's leading scorer, was also excellent on the defensive end, grabbing seven boards and picking up a steal.
The Gaels' defense was relentless throughout the game and limited Pacific to shoot just 21 percent overall, a season-best for SMC, and 18 percent from three. Saint Mary's also earned five steals, blocked four shots, and outrebounded the Tigers, 40-26.
No other Gael needed to reach double-figures to pull out the win. Malik Fitts scored seven and Tommy Kuhse, Jordan Hunter, and Tanner Krebs all added five more.
Hunter quietly had a strong all-around game as he swatted three shots, all in the first half, collected seven rebounds, and dished out three assists. The 6-10 Aussie also had a game-high plus-minus at +24.
The Gaels took a 26-15 lead into the second half while holding Pacific to a meager 20-percent from the floor. Ford nearly outscored the entire Pacific lineup in the first half with 14 points and also grabbed six boards.
Saint Mary's held Pacific scoreless for almost the first five minutes of the game. The Gaels' defense continued to give the Tigers' offense problems as they held Pacific to go 1-for-12 to begin the contest.
Jeremiah led Pacific with eight points in the game. Jahlil Tripp and Roberto Gallinat, who combined for 43 points in the Tigers' and Gaels' first meeting, contributed just five total points.
