WTEN | Gaels Begin WCC Play Against Dons, Broncos

Saint Mary's will face off against San Francisco on Saturday and Santa Clara on Sunday for their first West Coast Conference matches of the season.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (3-7) will open West Coast Conference play this week as they travel to San Francisco to take on the Dons on Saturday and will face off against the Broncos at Santa Clara on Sunday.

LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels are on a two-game win streak as they are coming off a 4-0 win over San Jose State and toughed out an impressive 6-1 victory over UC Davis. In the matchup against the Aggies, five Gaels defeated their opposition in singles action with four winning in straight sets. On doubles courts, Saint Mary's duos Hind Abdelouahid/Mariia Kozyreva and Jordan Harris/Danielle McIntyre each took 6-3 wins to clinch the doubles point.

Kozyreva continues to lead the Gaels in the No. 1 singles seed this year as she currently owns a 5-2 record. Abdelouahid and Kozyreva have proven to be the Gaels' top doubles duo as they are 3-1 in the No. 1 spot.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO
The Dons currently hold a 7-5 overall record and Saturday's matchup against Saint Mary's will be their first WCC contest this season. In their last matchup, the Dons clinched a 4-3 victory over Nevada to improve their at home record to 6-4. Emily Maxfield has dominated on singles courts this year as she holds a 11-0 record in the No. 2 spot for the Dons. Mya Bui has also held her own in singles play as she owns a 8-4 record as the No. 1 seed. In doubles action, Maxfield and Bui have proven to lead the Dons with a 6-2 record as the top doubles tandem.

ABOUT SANTA CLARA
The Broncos are 3-6 so far this season with a 0-2 record in West Coast Conference action. Santa Clara has dropped their last three contests and in their most recent matchup against No. 4 Stanford, the Broncos managed to secure a point, but they were ultimately overcome 6-1 by Stanford. Maddie Pothoff narrowly defeated her opposition on singles court No. 1 in three sets to claim the lone victory for the Broncos. Pothoff holds a 12-5 overall record and is 7-1 as the top singles seed. Pothoff and Elvena Gevargiz have led Santa Clara in the No. 1 doubles seed with a 6-2 record so far this year. As a team, the Broncos own a 32-36 overall record in doubles action.
