MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels took the lead early in the series finale and never looked back, securing both the game and series victory against first-place Loyola Marymount – the Lions' first WCC series loss this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SMC got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as a single from senior Eddie Haus set up a double to right center from junior Kevin Milam to score the run. Then, junior Joe Vranesh drove in Milam with a sacrifice fly after he advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Gaels led 2-0.
- The Gaels made it a 5-0 lead in the third thanks to back-to-back homeruns from both Milam (his fifth – a two-run homer) and Vranesh (his eighth).
- LMU responded with their first run of the game in the top of the fourth, thanks to a homer from Esquerra who leads the WCC in big flies. The solo shot cut SMC's lead to 5-1
- The Gaels scored their final run of the afternoon in the fifth, taking advantage of two hit-by-pitches to put Milam and Vranesh on first and second respectively. Then, junior Ryan Novis followed with a single to left-center to score Milam, giving SMC a 6-1 advantage.
- Sophomore Carlos Lomeli cruised through the next two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair. He recorded two outs in the eighth before letting two batters reach by way of an infield single and hit batsman. Milam then entered the game in relief and on his first pitch, the Lions' Esquerra hit his second homerun of the game. This scored three runs and made it a 6-4 ballgame in favor of SMC.
- Nonetheless, sophomore Michael Hobbs was able to seal the deal in the ninth, striking out the side to secure his fifth save of 2019.
