BASE | Gaels Outlast Wolfpack 6-5 in Marathon, 12-Inning Game

MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels won in poetic fashion on Tuesday as they took the game to 12 innings before winning on a throwing error to home plate and securing the 6-5 victory over Nevada.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Kevin Milam got the offense started on Tuesday in the second inning with his fourth homerun of the season to left field and put the Gaels up 1-0.

  • Freshman Kyle Velazquez was walked to begin the bottom of the third inning and stole second base on a wild pitch shortly after. Junior Joe Vranesh then hit a single to short right center and Velasquez scored the second run of the day for SMC. Junior Ryan Novis then hit a single to left field and put runners at first and second with one out. Another wild pitch advanced Vranesh and Novis to third and second respectively before Milam was walked to load the bases. No other runs came across the plate and the Gaels went into the fourth with a 2-0 lead.

  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Velazquez hit an RBI single to the pitcher that advanced JC Santini to second and Charles Zaloumis to third, but it was overthrown and Zaloumis scored. Vranesh then hit a single to right field that scored Santini and gave the Gaels the 4-0 advantage.

  • Jonathan Buckley pitched strong for SMC in his fourth start of the season and did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth. Prior to the fifth inning, Buckley had struck out five batters and hadn't given up a walk. In the bottom of the fifth, Buckley gave up his first two hits of the game and hit a batter to load the bases with one out. A walk gave the Wolfpack their first run of the day and then a base hit up the right side scored two more runs for Nevada.

  • Freshman Bryce Willits singled to third base followed by a single to left field Novis. Junior Matt Green then came in to pinch hit and drove a single up the middle to score Willits and advance himself and Novis to second and third. Gabe Giosso was then walked to load the bases with two outs. The next batter popped out and the inning ended, but the Gaels left the inning with the 5-3 lead.

  • The Wolfpack recorded a walk and a triple to left center to start the top of the seventh and score their fourth run. Following a walk and a single to the left side, Nevada tied the game 5-5 with one out and runners at first and second. The hit was a fly out to right field and then Milam struck out the final batter of the inning and the two teams went into the bottom half of the seventh tied 5-5.

  • Matt Green hit a leadoff single to left field to begin the bottom of the ninth inning before Jacob Talamante came in to pinch run. Giosso then laid down a successful sacrifice bunt and advanced Talamante to second base. With one out, Eddie Haus struck out swinging for the second out of the inning. Jack Murphy was then walked to put runners at first and second. Gio Diaz then grounded out and the two teams went to the tenth inning.

  • Freshman Daniel Mendez started off the bottom of the 12th with a triple off the right field wall. Diaz was then walked followed by an intentional walk of Vranesh to load the bases. Novis then hit a comebacker to the pitcher and an error on the throw home scored the winning run for the Gaels and gave the the 6-5 victory.
