MALIBU, Calif. – The Gaels finished the regular season on a high-note as
Carlos Lomeli's dominance propelled them to a 4-0 shutout of the Pepperdine Waves that secured the series win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams held one another scoreless until the top of the fourth inning as Saint Mary's put the first two runners on the bases with singles from junior Kevin Milam and junior Ryan Novis. With two outs, sophomore Gio Diaz singled to shortstop to load the bases for JC Santini who reached first on an error on the throw to first and two runs came across for SMC. Junior Joe Vranesh then reached on fielder's choice and the Gaels ended the top of the fourth with the 3-0 lead.
- Senior Eddie Haus sent his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall in the eighth inning to give Saint Mary's the 4-0 advantage with only an inning and a half to go.
- Carlos Lomeli carried the Gaels through 8.0 innings before junior Michael Hobbs came in to pitch relief. Lomeli only gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five batters and not allowing a single earned run. Sunday's game was just the second time all season the Lomeli had allowed fewer than three hits and it was hit fifth start in which he allowed no earned runs.
QUOTABLE
"Lomeli just pounded the strike zone today, I'm proud of him," said head coach Eric Valenzuela. "I'm proud of this team for just coming back after game one. We need momentum going into this weekend and having Carlos pitch like that gave us that momentum. I'm glad we got a big win in a tough place."
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 3: With today's win and Gonzaga's win at LMU, the Gaels secured third place in the WCC standings. BYU takes first place, Gonzaga ends in second and LMU takes fourth place to round out the field for the tournament.
