SB | McCoy Shuts Down BYU For Doubleheader Split

Eryn McCoy threw a complete game shutout in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to propel Saint Mary's to a win.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's did well to subdue a potent BYU (26-22, 10-2 WCC) lineup with terrific pitching as both teams split Saturday's doubleheader at Cottrell Field.

Game 1
BYU 3, Saint Mary's 2

The Gaels (12-36, 5-7 WCC) never quit in the first game of the afternoon as they crossed both of their runs in the final frame to cut the deficit to only one. With two outs in the inning, Nikki Alexander took advantage of a Cougar error and knocked an RBI single up the middle to score Kalissa Heihn and Julia McCormack.

BYU would escape with their second win of the series however as pitcher Autumn Moffat induced a ground ball to end the game.

Sofia Earle was given the tough luck loss as she recorded a quality start in the circle. The left-hander allowed two earned runs through six innings and struck out seven batters in the contest.

Alexander's seventh inning single was one of only three hits in the game for SMC. Seniors Dylan Linton and Abbey Mariani earned the other two with singles while Jayda Alaan was also hit by pitches twice to get on base safely.

The Cougars scored one run in the second to take an early lead and added two more in the sixth, thanks in part to a solo homer from third baseman Emilee Erickson.

Game 2
Saint Mary's 2, BYU 0

Eryn McCoy was the difference maker for Saint Mary's in Game 2 as she held BYU scoreless in a complete game shutout. McCoy scattered seven hits, didn't allow a walk, and struck out one while needing just 79 pitches to pick up the win.

The Cougars entered the weekend series far and away the conference's top offensive club but couldn't figure out McCoy all game. After posting 13 hits in Friday's game, BYU totaled only 11 hits in Saturday's doubleheader.

Alaan put SMC on the board with an RBI single in the third to score Nikki Alexander and Mariani tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with another single up the middle to score Linton.

Mariani and Linton again led the team's offense with two-hit games and Linton also stole her fourth bag of the season. Saint Mary's tallied eight total hits in the contest.
