The Gaels clinched their sixth conference win of the season on Friday with a victory over the Toreros.
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's opened their final series of the season by picking up a win over San Diego (19-28, 3-10 WCC) with a solid overall team performance.
The Gaels (13-36, 6-7 WCC) broke through in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. After the team's first two batters were retired, Kimiko Zapanta bunted for a single and immediately stole second base to move into scoring position. Jayda Alaan then drew a walk and senior Dylan Linton followed suit with a RBI single up the middle to score the speedy Zapanta.
Another SMC senior, Bailey Lotz, was next up and perfectly placed a single to right field to drive in Alaan to give Saint Mary's a 2-0 lead.
After San Diego took a run back in the fourth, the Gaels' senior leadership secured an insurance run as Linton led off the sixth win a triple down the right field line and Lotz brought her home with a suicide squeeze in the next at bat.
Sofia Earle earned her fifth win of the season coming out of the bullpen as she pitched 3.1 innings with three hits and no runs allowed. Eryn McCoy started in the circle for Saint Mary's and allowed only one run over 3.2 frames.
