MORAGA, Calif. — Fresh off their fifth consecutive NCAA Regionals appearance, the Saint Mary's golf team is back to work with several members playing in amateur tournaments across the globe this summer. Here is a quick update of what head coach Scott Hardy's club has been up to.
Blake Hathcoat, the team's top performer last season, participated at the Amateur Championship at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland this month which is one of the largest amateur tournaments in the world. The rising senior led his team with a 71.74 stroke average last season and was selected First Team All-WCC for the first time in his career.
Ryan Grauman posted a second place finish at the 93rd Ernie Piper Santa Clara County Championship which was held during the first week of June. Fellow Gaels Ash Hakim and Evan Peterson also played in the tournament which was held at San Jose Country Club. Grauman posted top-15 finishes at the Memorial Amateur in Carmichael, Calif. and the Southwestern Amateur held in Scottsdale, Ariz. as well.
Peterson recorded the best finish among the five Gaels competing at the 2019 Sizzler Amateur, also held in Scottsdale, by tying for sixth out of 84 competitors. Kent Kao, Jeffrey Inouye-Wong, Ethan Ashbrook, and Dylan VanderVeer were the other Gaels who participated in the event.
After notching a top finish at a local qualifying tournament, Michael Slesinski played at one of 12 US Open qualifying sectionals held in Newport Beach, Calif. The rising redshirt junior was one of 500 competitors out of 8,602 entrants to make it to the sectional round of play.
Ashbrook, Grauman, Inuoye-Wong, Kao, and Peterson also appeared at the 108th California Amateur Championship which was held this week at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Inuoye-Wong was the team's top finisher and just barely missed the cut at 1-over.
