MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's women's basketball will officially begin their 2019-20 campaign on November 5 at Nevada. The rest of their non-conference slate is highlighted by four NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, including UC Davis, NC State, Marquette, and Central Florida.
"We are very proud of our schedule for the 2019-20 basketball season," said head coach Paul Thomas. "Each contest will challenge us to bring our best effort as coaches and student-athletes."
After facing the Wolfpack in Nevada, the Gaels' home opener will take place on November 8 when they host UC Santa Barbara at 6:30 p.m. SMC is currently on a four-game win streak against the Gauchos and they are 7-6 all-time. Then, Saint Mary's will finish their three-game week with a trip to Laramie, Wyo. to face Wyoming on Sunday the 10th. The Gaels have played the Cowgirls just twice and have won both times including a 90-84 victory in last year's season opener.
The following week, SMC will host a pair of teams who reached the NCAA Tournament last season: UC Davis and NC State. This will be the 13th-consecutive season that the Gaels have faced off with the Aggies and they were narrowly defeated in Davis in 2018, falling by just two points. Then, November 24 will mark the first time that SMC and NC State have ever played each other. The Wolfpack were the No. 3 seed in the tournament last year and made it to the third round before falling to No. 2-seed Iowa 79-61.
The Gaels will then return home to host the annual Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic where they will take on Marquette and Western Kentucky. Tulsa will also be in attendance. SMC is 0-3 against Marquette, however the two programs last faced each other 18 years ago in 2001. Western Kentucky is an unfamiliar foe to Saint Mary's, but the Lady Toppers made it to the third round of the WNIT before falling to Ohio. Meanwhile, Marquette fell in the Big East Tournament Championship game, but advanced to the NCAA Tournament nonetheless. There, they reached the second round as a No. 5 seed and lost to Texas A&M 78-76.
One week later, SMC will host Cal Poly who is another frequented opponent of the Gaels. This will be the eighth-straight season in which Saint Mary's and the Mustangs face off and SMC is 8-0 during that time (12-0 all-time). Eight days later, the Gaels will head to Lawrence to face Kansas on December 15. The Jayhawks went 13-18 last season and finished 10th in the Big 12.
The following weekend, Saint Mary's will close out their non-conference schedule with a pair of games at the UCF Tournament December 20-21. The Knights went 26-7 overall and 13-3 in the AAC in 2018-19, but fell to UConn in the AAC Tournament Championship game. UCF advanced to the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to No. 5-seed Arizona State.
