MORAGA, Calif. — Gaels' softball head coach Sonja Garnett officially announced today the promotion of assistant coach Emily Montanez to associate head coach in preparation of the 2020 season. 

"Coach Montanez works tirelessly for our athletes and program," Garnett said. "She is well deserving of the title of associate head coach and it is an honor to watch her grow in her career."

Montanez served under Garnett during her first season at Saint Mary's and was also an assistant while Garnett headed the Academy of Art softball team. 

"For the past four years I have had the pleasure of working with Emily and seeing her positive impact our athletes as young women, students and athletes. Her excitement to see Saint Mary's softball excel and compete makes us better every day. I am proud to be a part of this transition in her coaching journey."

"I am honored to be promoted to Associate Head Softball Coach," said Montanez. "Coach Garnett has been an incredible mentor and my strong belief in what we are building here drives me everyday. I am proud to be a part of SMC Softball and will continue fostering excellence in our student athletes."

Montanez helped the Gaels go 7-8 in WCC play last season which represented the most conference wins by the team since 2014. With six seniors set to return in the spring, Saint Mary's will be looking to make a strong push for a spot atop the conference standings.
