GOLF | Hakim Leads Gaels at Gold Mountain

Junior Ash Hakim is even after two rounds to lead Saint Mary's efforts at the Husky Invitational.
BREMERTON, Wash. — Saint Mary's opened up the first day of their 2019-20 season at the Husky Invitational held at Gold Mountain Golf Club and sit in seventh out of 15 teams after two rounds of play.
THE LEADERBOARD
The host Washington leads all teams with a combined 22-under total, good for an eight stroke lead over second place Long Beach State. Nevada, Oregon State, and Oregon round out the top five, respectively.
Ash Hakim currently leads Saint Mary's scorecard as he's tied for 19th. After a tough opening 18, Hakim recovered and shot 3-under in the middle round to jump 36 spots in the rankings. The junior holed 11 birdies on the day to tie him for second in the category out of 76 competitors.
Michael Slesinski and Blake Hathcoat each finished 1-over after two rounds and are tied for 24th. Slesinski had one of the best shots of the day as he made his first career hole-in-one on the 170-yard par 3 5th. The redshirt junior tied for first in the field for scores on par 3's on the day.
Ethan Ashbrook and Ryan Grauman each finished 3-over to tie for 38th.
Long Beach State's Owen Avrit stands alone atop the individual leaderboard with a 7-under total. Three competitors remain one stroke behind Avrit and four more are just two strokes back.

FIRST DAY HIGHLIGHTS
Three Gaels competed in a 58 competitor field just down the road from Gold Mountain at McCormick Woods. After two rounds, Ethan Farnam leads the Gaels' efforts at 5-over and tied for 11th while Evan Peterson is just a stroke behind. Dylan VanderVeer currently sits in the middle of the pack at t-27th.
Oregon State's Shawn Lu has a three stroke lead over his nearest competitor and heads into the final day at 4-under.
