Evan Peterson had a terrific performance during the first day of action in Fresno.
FRESNO, Calif. — Saint Mary's had a stellar start to the Nick Watney Invitational with both of their competing individuals finishing in the top-third of the leaderboard.
Evan Peterson led the charge for the Gaels and finished the day tied for third out of the 92-competitor field. After a stellar 5-under first round, Peterson kept the momentum by shooting 3-under in the middle round for an 8-under total.
The redshirt senior only had one bogey on the day and cleaned up on par 5's with a tournament-best 5-under score on those holes. Heading into the final day, Peterson trails only Hunter Epson of Long Beach State (10-under) and BYU's Peter Kuest (9-under) for medalist honors.
Dylan VanderVeer also had a solid day on the course and will enter Tuesday's round t-27th. After a 3-over opening 18, the redshirt junior jumped 33 spots on the leaderboard by shooting 3-under in the second round. VanderVeer tore up the back 9 during the afternoon round with five birdies and an eagle on the par 5 16th for a 6-under total.
Just like Peterson, VanderVeer led the field with a 5-under score on par 5's through the first two rounds.
