MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels come home to Moraga this weekend for their first home games of the season as they host the Bay Area Invitational against Cornell and Utah State.
SCOUTING REPORT
Saint Mary's went 1-2 at the Thunderbird Classic last weekend in Utah, losing their first two matches to Southern Utah and Boise State before coming back in the final match to take down Middle Tennessee.
The freshmen represented well for the Gaels last week as Kelsey Knudsen and Elena Baka both produced stellar performances. Knudsen was named to the Thunderbird Classic All-Tournament Team as she produced 25 digs and 9 assists while serving as libero in all 14 sets. Her best performance was against Southern Utah where she picked up 16 digs and seven assists. Baka recorded a career night for the Gaels against Middle Tennessee as she recorded 13 kills and 11 digs, as well as a block and an ace.
Sophomore Breyan Ashley recorded three straight double-doubles at the Thunderbird Classic including a 19-kill (career-high), 14-dig night against Boise State. Ashley ended the weekend with 46 kills and 42 digs over three matches. She leads the team with a total of 71 kills and is second on the team behind Knudsen with 53 digs.
CORNELL
The Big Red have started their season at 2-1 following the Cornell Invitational over the weekend. The team swept opponents Youngstown State and Niagara University to begin the tournament before falling 2-3 against Hartford. Cornell has yet to play a match on the road this season and the Bay Area Invitational will open a six-game roadtrip for the Big Red. Sophomore Jillienne Bennett leads the team with 30 kills followed by senior Jada Stackhouse with 27. The Gaels have played the Big Red just two times dating back to 1997 and they are undefeated during that time. The last time that the two schools faced off was in 2007 and SMC swept the match, 3-0.
UTAH STATE
The Aggies have had a tough start to their season as they fell to 0-7 this weekend after dropping three matches at the North Portland Marriott Invitational. Utah State took a set against Washington State but ultimately fell, before they were then swept by Idaho. The team nearly took the win against Portland, but came up one set short in their final match of the tournament. The Aggies will visit San Francisco on Friday for a match before traveling over the bridge to face SMC.
