GOLF | Slesinski in 6th, Gaels in 4th After Day 1 of Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. — After one day and two rounds at the Arizona Intercollegiate held at Sewailo Golf Club, the Gaels sit in fourth place in their first tournament of 2020.
THE LEADERBOARD
Saint Mary's is at 6-over after 36 holes and trail only ranked teams heading into the final round. No. 11 Arizona (10-under), No. 12 Baylor (4-under), and No. 17 Washington (3-over) are atop the leaderboard, respectively.
Leading Saint Mary's efforts is Michael Slesinski who is in sixth place out of 84 competitors. Slesinski is 3-under after two rounds and is followed closely by Blake Hathcoat who is tied for ninth at 1-under.
Rounding out the lineup is Ethan Farnam at 2-over, Ash Hakim at 10-over, and Evan Peterson at 12-over. Dylan VanderVeer is competing as an individual and currently sits in the middle of the pack at t-45th and 5-over.
Arizona's Trevor Werbylo leads all competitors at 6-under while three other golfers remain one stroke behind. Saint Mary's is one of only three teams in the 14-team field with two or more competitors in the top-10.

FIRST AND SECOND ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
The last round of the tournament takes place tomorrow. The Gaels begin play at 8 a.m. on holes 5, 6, and 7 while VanderVeer starts on hole 17.

- SMC was the third best team on par 4's on the day at 11-over.
- Hathcoat was 3-under on par 4's on Monday, third best in the tourney.

- The Gaels had 34 birdies as a team, third most in the event.
