BVB | Gaels Announce 2020 Beach Schedule
2/14/2020 2:43:00 PM | Women's Beach Volleyball
MORAGA, Calif. — With the 2020 season about one week away, Saint Mary's College has a schedule full of notable opponents in 2020. Included in this year's schedule are six home games across five different dates, a trip to Hawaii, and two different tournaments in the regular season.
SEASON OPENER – FEB. 22 vs. CAL and GRAND CANYON
The new beach volleyball season officially kicks off on Saturday, February 22 as the Gaels welcome in No. 11 University of California and No. 14 Grand Canyon University for a doubleheader. Saint Mary's will serve as the host of the opener, taking on Cal at 11:30 am and GCU at 2:00 pm. The Gaels own a 5-9 lifetime record against the Golden Bears, but they haven't picked up a win against Cal in their last four tries. The matchup against the Lopes in the second half of the double-dip represents the first ever matchup between the two programs. All-time, the Gaels have had a lot of success beginning seasons, winning 6 of their 7 season openers, dating back to 2013.
ALOHA, WCC!
For the second year in a row, the Gaels will travel out to Hawaii to take on some tough opponents, including two West Coast Conference foes. Saint Mary's will head for the Aloha State from April 4-7, with five matches scheduled across those dates. The Gaels will begin against No. 8 LMU and No. 5 University of Hawaii on the 4th, then play another doubleheader on the 5th against UC Davis and Portland. The trip across the Pacific concludes on the 7th with another match against the Rainbow Warriors. Last season, the Gaels began their campaign in Hawaii, squaring off against four ranked opponents, and went 1-3.
MARCH MADNESS
It won't quite be like the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament that captivates the country during the month of March, but the Gaels will participate in a pair of tournaments during March. The first takes place on March 7 and is where the WCC and the Big West collide in the 2020 WCC/Big West Challenge. The Gaels will play a trio of matches beginning at 10:00 am against Sacramento State, CSU Bakersfield, and CSU Northridge. A few weeks later, the Gaels will return to Santa Cruz for the WCC Midseason Tournament, where they will do battle with Portland and USF on March 27.
