GOLF | Gaels Open John Burns Intercollegiate on High Note

LIHUE, Hawaii — Saint Mary's put themselves in good positioning after one round at the John Burns Invitational at Wailua Golf Course and sit tied for eighth heading into Friday's round.

THE LEADERBOARD
Michael Slesinski led the Gaels on the first day of the tournament after a solid first round. The redshirt junior is tied for 10th in the field of 123 as he shot 71 with a 1-under finish. Slesinski collected four birdies in the round and shot par or under par in each hole.

Blake Hathcoat finished his opening round in the top-25 at tied for 24th with a 1-over finish. Hathcoat tallied three birdies during the first round and shot par twice in the front nine while shooting even on the back nine. Rounding out the field for the Gaels is Ethan Farnam who finished the first round at 2-over, Dylan VanderVeer at 3-over, and Ash Hakim with a 8-over finish.

Saint Mary's sits in tied for eighth alongside Long Beach State and No. 6 Arizona as they head into the second round. UNCW and No. 15 BYU lead the pack as they are both tied for first with a 287 round score. Six competitors are tied for first at 3-under following the first round including BYU's No. 33 Peter Kuest.

FIRST ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Four Gaels birdied the 535 yard par 5.
Saint Mary's posted the third best scores on par 3's on the day (3-over).
Four Gaels are in the top half of the field.
VanderVeer bounced back from a 3-over front nine to shoot even on the back nine.
