SB | Gaels Pick Up First Win of the Season Over Idaho State

DAVIS, Calif. — The Gaels picked up their first win of the 2020 season on Saturday as they beat Idaho State 12-3 to complete the Norcal Kickoff Tournament.

It was Saint Mary's who struck first on Saturday as they put up a six-run third inning to break open a big lead. The first run of the game was walked in before Hannah Chew singled to center field and drove in both Julia McCormack and Maddie Gallagher. A sacrifice bunt by Halle Sullivan and a  number of throwing errors by the Bengals drove in the next four runs for SMC as the Gaels ended the third inning with a 6-0 lead.

Saint Mary's continued to put the pressure on Idaho State as they tacked on another four runs in the top of the fourth. Chew started things off with a double to center before Sullivan doubled down the right field line and drove in her teammate. Jaymee Campbell then followed up with a triple that scored Sullivan and then Indya Smith cleared the bases with her first home run of her collegiate career.

The Gaels put up two more runs in the fifth as Gallagher hit her first homerun of the season with McCormack standing on first base. The Bengals only response came in the bottom of the fifth when they were able to score three runs following a few walks and defensive errors by SMC, but it wasn't enough to come back from a 12-run deficit.

Chew ended the day going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs along with a walk, while Gallagher went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Gallagher and Smith's home runs combined for the first mulit-home run game of the season for SMC.

In the circle, a trio of freshmen made up the pitching staff on Saturday. Vanessa Ritchie made her first collegiate start and pitched three innings while giving up just two hits and striking out three batters. Marissa Woolsey (1.1 IP)  and Kayla Scott (0.2 IP) came in and closed out the game while only giving up one combined earned run.

UP NEXT: BULLDOG CLASSIC
Saint Mary's will travel to Fresno for their next matchups as they look to take part in the Bulldog Classic. The Gaels will face off against Cal first on February 14 at 9:00 a.m. before playing Cal Poly later in the day.
