MODESTO, Calif. — While the Gaels' season may have come to a close over three months ago, Blake Hathcoat and Michael Slesinski proved they are still in mid-season form this weekend as they claimed first place in the Open-Am flight of the 2020 Billy Bell Cup held at Del Rio Golf and Country Club.
The third-year event is a 36-hole better-ball tournament with 34 teams competing in this year's Open-Am flight. Hathcoat and Slesinski, two veterans in the Gaels' lineup, had a blazing start in the first round with an 8-under 64 score. Another solid round of 68 to close out the event at 12-under secured them the title by one stroke.
"Both of us were able to buckle down and come through when the other wasn't having a great hole," said Slesinski on the win. "We both knew going into the tournament that the nine holes on the Bluff were more suited for scoring low so we made it our goal to play those holes well."
Hathcoat and Slesinski weren't the only Gaels to compete in the event. Following closely behind and finishing tied for fifth place was Evan Peterson and Dylan VanderVeer at 8-under. Ethan Ashbrook and his cousin Luke Adam, a collegiate golfer at Cal Poly, teamed up to finish tied for eight just one stroke back of Peterson and VanderVeer.
Ash Hakim and Jonathan Curran also competed in the event and combined for a 5-under score to finish in the middle of the leaderboard.
