CARMEL, Calif. – There was no shortage of low scores at this week's Preserve Golf Club Collegiate hosted by Cal Poly as eight of the eleven competing schools finished the three-round event in red figures. Saint Mary's sat in fourth place after 36 holes, shooting a combined 19-under-par. They would fall three spots though in the final round on Tuesday after shooting a combined seven-over-par to finish in seventh place.
The Gaels carried their momentum from their fall invitational at Bayonet the week prior and put together two solid rounds of golf on Monday, 9-under over the first 18 holes and then 10-under in the second round to sit inside the top-five. All four counting scores in round one were in red figures including a team low 68 (-4) from junior Inigo Izuzquiza. Izuzquiza finished his first 18 holes on a heater with birdies on each of his final three holes to finish four-under-par. Redshirt freshman Sam Baumuller was three-under with six birdies on the day. Baumuller was nearly perfect aside from a costly double-bogey on the par-four third. Mitchell Hoey and Avery Lazarski rounded on the first round scoring with a pair of 71's to finish 9-under as a team.
The entire field would turn around and play another 18 holes on Monday but the Gaels showed no signs of fatigue as they finished one stroke better over the second round. Hoey led the charge for the afternoon, posting a 67 (-5) for the lowest individual round of the tournament for Saint Mary's. Hoey was stellar on the back nine, playing bogey free golf and tallying five birdies. Izuzquiza posted a 69 (-3) while Avery Lazarski and Sam Baumuller were each one-under-par to combine for a second round of 10-under.
Despite trending in the right direction, Saint Mary's took a different turn on Tuesday with final round of seven-over-par. Hoey and Lazarski finished in red figures, both at one-under-par, but the next two counting scores for Saint Mary's combined to shoot nine-over. The entire field struggled on Tuesday, combining to shoot a tournament high 73.75 compared to a low of 71.26 in round two the day prior.
Hoey capped off a solid finish to the fall season with his second consecutive top-ten finish, placing eighth individually at seven-under-par. Lazarski jumped nine spots thanks to his final round of one-under, finishing t-21st while Izuzquiza finished t-25th at two-under-par over his three rounds. Redshirt freshman James Williams competed as an individual for Saint Mary's and finished t-46th at five-over-par. Williams recorded a 70 (-2) in his second round for his low round of the week.
