MONTEREY, Calif. - Despite some late night showers and thunderstorms, Saint Mary's came out and posted the lowest team score round of the entire week at 11-under to lock up second place in the 2025 Saint Mary's Invitational. Arkansas State led the tournament going into the final round Wednesday morning and the 41st ranked (Scoreboard) Red Wolves did just enough, shooting seven-under to hang on for the four-stroke victory at Bayonet Golf Course.
Three of the four counting scores for Saint Mary's were in red figures including senior Aidan Lee who shook off a couple of tough rounds to start the week and carded a 68 (-4) in his final round. Just in front of him was fellow senior Mitchell Hoey who posted a team low 67 (-5) which featured just one bogey and six birdies.
Inigo Izuzquiza birdied the par-5 18th to bring his final round to two-under while Sam Baumuller finished even par as the fourth counting score. Arkansas State had some magic down the stretch to stay out of reach of the Gaels as individual champion Jake Wallis eagled two of his final three holes to secure the team title. Hoey jumped 19 spots to finish in third place while Izuzquiza and Baumuller finished t-8th place to round out the top-ten. Lee's four-under round jumped him a whopping 32 spots on the final day while Avery Lazarski finished in 12th place at one-under. The final round leaderboard can be found HERE or at smcgaels.com.
Saint Mary's will walk away with their head held high though after recording the lowest team round of the week at 11-under. They have now recorded back-to-back top-three finishes and will look to keep the momentum rolling at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate next week in Carmel.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's will turn right around next week and compete in their final event of the fall season at the Preserve Golf Club Collegiate down in Carmel. Tournament information and live scoring can be found at smcgaels.com.
