LAST TIME OUT (2nd place at Saint Mary's Invitational)
Saint Mary's finished their three-day event at Bayonet last week on a high, posting a tournament low 11-under final round to secure second place in the 16-team field. They nearly overcame an eight-stroke deficit heading into the final round but 41st ranked Arkansas State held on for the four-stroke victory thanks to a pair of clutch eagles over the final three holes from individual champion Jake Wallis.
For the Gaels, their two seniors stepped up with their lowest rounds of the week to lead the final day surge. After bogeying the second hole to start his round, senior Mitchell Hoey rattled off six birdies including two over his final four holes to post a 67 (-5). Fellow senior Aidan Lee followed suit with a 68 (-4) for his lowest round of the tournament. Lee really applied some pressure to the Red Wolves with a birdie on 17 and then an eagle on the par five 18th to bring Saint Mary's within a couple of strokes.
Hoey finished in third place at four-under for the week while Inigo Izuzquiza and Sam Baumuller were solid all week long, finishing in a tie for eighth place at two-under. Third-year Gael Avery Lazarski was the drop score on Wednesday but he was near the top of the leaderboard after the first two rounds, posting a 68 (-4) to open the tournament on Monday. Saint Mary's has finished in the top-five in three of their four events this fall and will look for their first win since winning the El Macero Classic in 2024.
