WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — Saint Mary's played in their first tournament of the spring today at the prestigious Southwestern Invitational and wrapped up play tied for 10th place out of 12 teams.

LEADERBOARD
Ethan Ashbrook led the team at 3-over on the day and is tied for 18th place heading into the second day. The Santa Maria, Calif. native led the Gaels with three birdies and shot 1-over on the back nine.

Dylan VanderVeer shot 6-over while Ethan Farnam finished the day at 9-over. Blake Hathcoat and freshman Dylan De Prosperis rounded out the team's scores at 10-over. The Gaels shot +28 as a team and tied with Augusta University on the leaderboard.

The conditions at North Ranch Country Club were brutal with temperatures in the mid-40's and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. No team finished under par across the first 18 holes and only five competitors finished below par.

Arizona State leads the team leaderboard at 4-over and is trailed by SMU (5-over) and San Diego State (6-over). Three players are currently tied for first at 2-under on the medalist leaderboard: Shane Ffrench from USC, Noah Goodwin from SMU, and David Puig from ASU.

FIRST ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Ashbrook had back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13.
Farnam also posted both of his birdies on back-to-back holes on 2nd and 3rd.
VanderVeer shot two strokes better on the back nine than on the front.
The Gaels shot a combined 1-under on the 382 yard par 4 7th.
