RENO, Nev. – Michael Slesinski of The Saint Mary's Golf Team's shot up the leader board on day two, finishing tied for the best score in round three and eighth overall at the 2021 Wolf Pack Classic hosted by the University of Nevada.
Slesinski climbed 20 spots on the player leader board after shooting a 65 with an eagle on day two to finish seven-under par. He was just five strokes out of the top spot overall with a score of 215 for the tournament, while making par 36 times.
With temps in the 30s and 40s, winds of 15-25 mph, and snow and hail showers through the first two rounds, the reigning WCC Golfer of the Month fought through the conditions of day one to put himself in a position to strike on day two.
"The conditions on the first day were brutal," Slesinski said. "Definitely one of the hardest, if not the hardest conditions I've ever played golf in. It was a test of mental fortitude and patience. But I knew I could go into the second day and take advantage of the good conditions if I just played my game. I set a goal last night to get back to even par total for the tournament. I stuck to the game plan, hit solid shots when I needed to, rolled in a few putts, and 22 holes later I found myself one-under for the tournament."
Every Gael improved their score as the tournament went on with clear and dry conditions, and temperatures in the 50s on day two. Freshman Kristian Bressum shot a 71 in round three, dropping his score by four strokes in every round to finish with a 222 overall and making par 36 times to get in the top 25.
Jonathan Curran finished with 223 strokes while making par 37 times, and Ryan Hartanto shot a 72 on day three making par 35 times to also finish with a 223 in the tournament.
Dylan VanderVeer shot a 73 on day two to finish with a 226 overall with the other eagle in the tournament for the Gaels, and Connor Reis shot a 77 in round three to finish with a score of 234.
Saint Mary's finished eighth overall in the team standings out of 15 teams, as the Gaels shot six-under par on day two while leading all teams in par-3s and eagles in the tournament.
