PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Golf Team is hosting the 15th annual SMC Invitational November 8-10 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach for the first time since 2019 after a pause in the yearly event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It's the sixth-straight year the event is taking place at Poppy Hills. The Invitational originally began in 2006 at Poppy Hills before moving four years later to Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in nearby Seaside, Calif. for the next five years. The 2021 tournament will mark the tenth time the event has been played at Poppy Hills.
This year's tournament features 19 teams and 104 golfers. The field of teams includes Stanford, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Oregon, San Diego, Northern Illinois, Fresno State, New Mexico, Colorado State, Coastal Carolina, Loyola Marymount, Nevada, BYU, Long Beach State, Oregon State, Seattle University, Washington State, and Pacific.
Gaels Freshman Mitchell Hoey came out of the gate on fire, finishing day one 5-under par and just two strokes off the leader after shooting a 66. Dylan VanderVeer is just two strokes behind his teammate with a 68, good for 3-under par and tied for ninth place overall. Hoey and VanderVeer each already have seven birdies, tied for second among all players.
Freshman Connor Reis isn't far behind, as he stands at 12th overall and 2-under par after shooting a 69 on day one. Ryan Hartanto made par on day one with a 71.
As a team the Gaels stand tied at sixth after round one at 1-under par and they are second in birdies with 19.
The tournament has featured 12 different team champions in its history with San Diego State and USC each taking the title twice. Colorado State won the 2019 tournament with a 25-under par combined score.
The USC Trojans set the tournament's 54-hole all-time low score in 2017 when they shot 28-under par. The previous record was held by Oregon at 11-under. Justin Suh shot 13-under that year to break the individual record which was tied in 2019 by BYU's Peter Kuest. Kuest set the 18-hole low record in 2018 as well when he shot 61 in the opening round.
