LAST TIME OUT
Taycee Wedin hit a buzzer-beating three pointer at the top of the key to break a 58-58 tie for a 61-58 victory over Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday afternoon in South Carolina. The Gaels handed CCU their first loss of the season (8-1) while they improved to 6-4 on the year in SMC's first ever meeting against the Chanticleers. It was Saint Mary's first time playing a team from the Sun Belt Conference since December of 2018 when they hosted Texas State, and it was Coast Carolina's first match up against a WCC team in their program's history.
Â
The Gaels got the ball to Wedin with three seconds left. The Chants defenders were glued to the Gaels top shooter, but Wedin created some space with a behind-the-back dribble. She raised up to shoot off just her right foot and fired a two-handed push shot to the basket that hit nothing but net as time expired and she fell to the ground.
Â
The Gaels rushed the court to celebrate, but the officials had to review the shot to make sure she got it off in time. A brief review confirmed the basket was good and the Gaels could then truly celebrate their 61-58 victory.
Â
Wedin is already the record holder for three pointers made in a season at Saint Mary's (104) and is just 16 three pointers away from tying the all-time record for career threes made at SMC as she currently has 252 made threes in her career. The WCC record for three pointers made in a career is also in range for Wedin, as the conference career record sits at 298.

Freshman guard
Jayda Curry was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season on Monday. Curry, who earned the honor three straight weeks to begin the season, takes home the accolades after matching her career-high with 27 points while shooting 61.5 percent from the field (8-for-13) and 66.6 percent from beyond the arc (4-for-6). Curry also grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and tallied three steals in the Bears' eighth win of the season.
At her current pace of 2.4 3-point field goals per game, Curry is set to finish the season with 72 made threes, which would set the program record for 3-point field goals in a season, breaking the record of 64 set by Jennifer Self in 1991-92.
For the season, Curry is averaging 20.3 points per game which is 17
th in the nation and tops among all freshmen, also leading the Pac-12. Against Cal Poly, she eclipsed 200 points for the season.
Â
Curry and
Jazlen Green posted career highs of 27 and 20 points to lead Cal (8-2) to an 89-73 victory over Cal Poly (1-7) in Cal's most recent game. The Golden Bears made a season-high 10 3-point field goals in the victory and also had their best shooting percentage of the season from beyond the arc (10-18, .556) with Curry (4-6) and Green (4-8) knocking down four each to equal career-highs.
