MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels (1-3) picked up their first victory of the year on Saturday by taking down UC Davis by the score of 5-2 at Korth Tennis Complex.
Saint Mary's got off to a good start by winning the doubles point. James Watt and Boris Reckow teamed up for a 6-3 win as the Gaels' No. 1 tandem but the Aggies tied the score by taking a close match on court 3. Damon Kesaris and Fabian Roensdorf would seal the doubles point for SMC by edging David Goulak/Dariush Jalali by the score of 7-5.
The Gaels quickly clinched the match in singles play with three straight set wins. James Watt knocked off Goulak on court 2 with scores of 6-3, 6-0 as did No. 6 seed Matis Bot with his opponent, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 23 Kesaris defeated the Aggies top singles player Ivan Thamma with a 6-2, 6-4 score to secure the victory for Saint Mary's. Roensdorf added the team's fifth point by grinding out a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win on court 3.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Feb. 20 with a trip down to San Diego to face the Toreros. First serve is at 1 p.m.
