SAN DIEGO — The Gaels (1-4, 0-1 WCC) opened conference play on the road against the Toreros on Saturday but fell 6-1 at Hogan Center.
Saint Mary's started the match strong and claimed the doubles point to jump ahead 1-0. Damon Kesaris and Fabian Roensdorf teamed up for a quick 6-2 win on court 2 to get the ball rolling for SMC. After USD took a match on court 3, James Watt and Boris Reckow grinded out a 7-6 (3) tiebreak win to earn the point for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's would have less fortune on the singles courts however as they dropped five of their six matches in straight sets. Matis Bot managed to force a third set in his match as the team's No. 6 player but was narrowly defeated in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
