GOLF | Hathcoat Claims Co-Medalist Honors at The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif. — Saint Mary's had another strong team performance in the final round at The Goodwin and finished fifth in a talent-packed field of 28 teams. The Gaels were led by senior Blake Hathcoat who tied for first in the field of 146 competitors to claim medalist honors.

Hathcoat secured his third straight top-10 finish by shooting 2-under on the day. The Fresno, Calif. native finished the tournament 10-under to tie with Nevada's Sam Harned for the top spot on the leaderboard. Hathcoat bested 10 ranked players and countless other quality opponents from top-ranked programs in the process of securing his second ever first-place finish in his collegiate career.

"Blake's win is likely the best individual finish in SMC history," said Gaels' head coach Scott Hardy. "He will join a list of some of the best players in the history of golf to win this event. Medalist out of 146 players is an outstanding result. I'm really proud to see Blake's hard work pay off."

Ethan Farnam had the Gaels' lowest score of the day at 3-under to jump 27 places on the leaderboard and tie for 24th. Evan Peterson shot 2-over to finish in the top half of the leaderboard and end t-64th as did Michael Slesinski who finished t-68th. Ethan Ashbrook counted his 3-over score on Saturday to conclude play 13-over.

As a team, SMC shot even on Saturday to complete the three-round tournament at 7-over. The only teams to finish ahead of the Gaels were Washington (5-over), No. 12 Pepperdine (2-over), the host Stanford (7-under), and the tournament winners No. 8 Arizona State (15-under).

Saint Mary's has competed at The Goodwin every season it's been hosted since 2014 and this year marked the team's best ever finish at the tourney. SMC finished ahead of three teams ranked among the top-45 in the country and nearly every team in the tournament was among the top-100 according to Golfstat.

"This week was the performance this team has been looking for," continued Hardy. "A fifth place finish in a 28-team field is a fantastic result. We can ride this momentum for the rest of the semester."
