MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's had their name littered all over the leaderboards this past weekend in the Coachella Amateur and the Napa Open. Current Gael Inigo Izuzquiza caught fire to shoot 16-under over his three rounds and take home the Coachella Amateur individual title in a field of 85 golfers. Teammates Sam Baumuller, Aidan Lee, Avery Lazarski and James Williams joined Izuzquiza in the field as Baumuller, Lee and Lazarski finished inside the top-20.
Izuzquiza was a consistent member of the team's starting lineup this past fall, competing in all five events with one top-10 finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational. The Gaels ended their fall campaign with three top-five finishes as a team and currently rank 64th nationally with their spring schedule slated to start January 26th.
Also finishing up last week was the 2025 Napa Open put on by the Asher Tour, the USA's longest-running professional golf mini-tour offering competitive events for pros and high-level amateurs across the West Coast. Current Saint Mary's men's golfer Mitchell Hoey finished t-21st at 1-under-par and was also accompanied by six SMC alumni including program great Jonathan De Los Reyes who won the event at 12-under-par.
Reyes was a member of the Gaels golf program from 2011-16 and put together the most decorated career of any other Gael in program history, finishing with three All-WCC First Team selections, four NCAA Regional appearances, two NCAA Championship appearances, three Division I PING All-Region selections and was also named the 2016 WCC co-Player of the Year.
Other notable alumni in the field included Blake Hathcoat and Zack Missigman who both finished t-11th at 5-under-par over their three rounds. Hathcoat was another decorated Gael who went on to make his PGA Tour debut in 2023 at the Fortinet Championship. He also competed in the John Deere Classic in 2024 for his most recent PGA Tour start. Also making the cut was 2021 graduate Dylan Vanderveer who finished t-17th at 4-under. Mikey Slesinski and Ash Hakim missed the cut after the second round but helped represent a strong Saint Mary's presence in the Napa Open featuring six alumni and one current player in Mitchell Hoey.

"It's great to see our players compete during the winter break", said SMC head coach Scott Hardy. "It keeps them in a competitive mindset going into our spring season. Following the scores from the Coachella Amateur and seeing Inigo dominate that field over 54 holes was impressive. He made a ton of birdies and most importantly kept bogeys off the scorecard. Inigo has worked very hard since he came to SMC in the fall of 2024 and it's showing. He made great strides this fall and we are excited to see him help this team peak later this spring" (Hardy).
"I've been really patient with my game this last year, and seeing it all come together to finally get a win felt great", said Inigo. "My goal was to minimize my mistakes, and once I felt comfortable I was able to make some putts which gave some momentum. It felt really good to have a bogey free final round and I'm excited to start the spring season at the NIT in January with the rest of the guys" (Izuzquiza).

"Johnny came to SMC from De La Salle where he was a standout junior player. He was one of the best players our program has had and it's great to see him starting to enjoy more and more success as a professional", said Hardy. "He's been out there grinding to find his way as a pro and this win was against a talented and large field. I think this could vault him to a great season in 2026 on the PGA Americas Tour and hopefully onto the Korn Ferry and PGA Tour as he progresses" (Hardy).
"This win was huge for me. I've been in contention a lot this year, and I've been working really hard on every part of my game, so it felt great to finally get it done this week", said Jonathan. "I honestly just love being in the mix in any tournament, and this was a really rewarding one. My time at Saint Mary's played a big role in getting me here. I was fortunate to have coach Hardy, who took my game to the next level. Beyond the results, the guidance and wisdom he shared with our team went far beyond what you see at many big programs. He taught me how to think for myself, understand my game, and keep developing in a way that allows me to compete at the highest level" (De Los Reyes).
