SAN JOSE, Calif. — With the indoor season coming to a close over the weekend, the beach season officially resumed on Sunday afternoon in exhibition fashion. The Gaels competed in pairs competition against several local teams, including two teams from the WCC: San Francisco and Santa Clara. It was an excellent tune up for Saint Mary's winning ten of their 12 matches, priming themselves well for the return to countable competitions on April 1 against #18 Stanford.
Four pairs of Gaels went to San Jose State for the exhibitions, and it was Sienna Young and Jasmin Suarez who put up three great showings against their opponents. First, Young and Suarez had no problem against San Jose State, scoring wins of 21-18 and 21-9 over the Spartans. Up next, they took on a pair from San Francisco, and took care of business comfortably with scores of 21-10 and 21-14. They ended their day with their most competitive match of the afternoon, going three sets against Santa Clara, but capped it off with a final win of 15-8 to remain perfect on the day.
The next Gaels pairing to finish 3-0 on the day was Madison Baumann and Karmin Brown, who went swept through their opponents, beginning with a 21-19 and 21-15 victory over Santa Clara in their first match. They went the distance in their third match of the afternoon, taking their final set of the day in thrilling 16-14 fashion to clinch a clean sweep on the day.
Alexsa "Crash" Parker and Morgan Kendrick paired up for the first time this season and swept through their opponents, beginning first by beating Santa Clara with finals of 21-9 and 21-13. Things were much tighter for Parker and Kendrick the rest of the way, but they prevailed through it all, taking down the Spartans pair 21-17 and 22-20. Their afternoon in the South Bay ended by beating the Santa Clara Broncos 21-18 and 21-17.
Trinity Durfee and Aeriel Sundt also competed and scored one victory on the afternoon, scoring a three-set victory against Santa Clara with finals of 21-18, 14-21, and 15-11. They also went the distance against the USF Dons, but wound up dropping the final set with a score of 15-7.
Saint Mary's will return to their home sand courts on Thursday, April 1 with their first countable beach match in nearly a month, as they host #18 Stanford. It will be the second time this year the Cardinal and the Gaels link up, as they did so in Palo Alto in early March, with Stanford winning 3-2. The Gaels will be at home twice over a six day span before heading out on the road for the WCC Midseason Tournament.
