ROW | Gaels in Action Against San Diego and Stanford
4/17/2021 9:09:00 PM | Women's Rowing
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — For the penultimate time in April, Saint Mary's Women's Rowing hit the waters at Redwood Shores to compete against a pair of California schools in San Diego and Stanford. All-in-all, the Gaels put six boats in the water across six different races, coming just shy of some big upset wins in a pair of races. Overall, it was an improved showing from last week's competitions against Sacramento State.
The day began just after 11:00 am when Saint Mary's first went to work in the varsity fours against Stanford's B team, and the Gaels put up a time of 8:49.6 in that race. The other varsity four they raced in on Saturday was just off that pace against the Toreros, with a time of 8:53.5. In a rare varsity two that Saint Mary's put together against San Diego, the Gels were bested despite their time of 7:29.
Three varsity eights went into the water for the Gaels, with three different lineups going to work. The first varsity eight that was led by Lina Rak as the coxswain came just 15 seconds off the pace from San Diego, with a time of 6:57.4, a major improvement from last week against the Hornets. After a slight lineup change, the Gaels were a tick slower in the second varsity eight, going against Stanford, but were just four seconds back with their 7:00.5 time.
Saint Mary's has one more race left on the schedule before the WCC championships in mid-May. Saint Mary's will take on LMU and Santa Clara next weekend on Saturday, April 24. The Gaels already have experience against Santa Clara this season, after taking down the Broncos in an exhibition in late March.
