SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the final time during the regular season, Saint Mary's Women's Rowing put boats in the water as they competed against WCC schools. In preparation of the WCC Championships in May, the Gaels took on LMU and Santa Clara on Saturday morning in Sacramento, and looking strong in the varsity eights while falling short in the varsity fours.
Saint Mary's came closest in the varsity eight competition, where they raced against both LMU and Santa Clara. The Gaels put two boats into this race, and their top varsity eight lineup nearly pulled off the win against LMU, coming within five seconds of first place with a time of 7:05.96. The Gaels second varsity eight lineup pulled up with a time of 7:26.05. It was only Saint Mary's and LMU squaring off in the varsity fours, where LMU was able to take care of business against the Gaels.
More importantly for SMC, this represented the final time their five seniors competed during the regular season, as Emily Pelster, Emily Milbrath, Katie Boselli, Katrina Heffernan, and Emily Sprigings all hit the water. This group of seniors has been around through a lot in the last four years, including an unprecedented hiatus of collegiate sports, but they were applauded by head coach Anna Pytlak.
"I'm really proud of this group," commented Pytlak. "All the work and commitment they have put into the team over the past four years really shows, especially this year. They have undoubtedly made a positive impact on the program and I can't thank them enough for that."
Saint Mary's will now wait for the WCC Championships, which take place on Saturday, May 15 in Folsom. This will mark the first time since 2019 that the Gaels have gotten the chance to compete in the conference championships, after last year's were canceled due the COVID-19 pandemic. Saint Mary's finished in fifth place at the 2019 event in Lake Natoma.
