GOLF | Dylan VanderVeer Wins 2021 Memorial Amateur

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's men's golf continued their streak of excellent play in summer amateur tournaments over the weekend as Dylan VanderVeer claimed a first place finish at the 2021 Memorial Amateur Championship on Monday.

The championship was held at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Carmichael, Calif. from Saturday to Monday and featured three rounds. The field was packed with Div. I college golfers and nearly 100 total competitors took the place in the event over the weekend. The course was configured as a par 72 and is just a hair over 7,000 yards from the tips.

VanderVeer posted round scores of 66-68-70 to shoot 14-under overall and win the tourney by four strokes. His first round score of 66 was the lowest score of any competitor in any round and he was one of only four golfers to score under par each day.

The Gael senior finished ahead of two competitors from Fresno State, Kevin Huff and Matthew Sutherland, who finished second and tied for third, respectively. VanderVeer also bested last year's tournament winner and Colorado commit Dylan McDermott. The complete leaderboard and results can be found here.

VanderVeer's accomplishment becomes yet another success story for SMC during the early days of summer. Over the past month, the Gaels placed first and third at the NCGA Four-Ball Championship, senior Blake Hathcoat advanced to the US Open final qualifying round, and Hathcoat and teammate Michael Slesinski made a deep run at the US Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
