MORAGA, Calif. — After rumbling in the Rockies last weekend, and opening up with a perfect 3-0 mark, Saint Mary's Volleyball is ready to kick off the party inside University Credit Union Pavilion. Friday night, the Gaels host San Jose State on Friday night at 6:00 pm before heading out on the road for a quick local match against Sacramento State on Saturday night at 6:00 pm.

LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's finished off a perfect 3-0 weekend in Laramie by winning the third and final match of the Rumble in the Rockies, hosted by the University of Wyoming. SMC did not lose a set while out of state, winning all nine against Siena and Wyoming. Chandler Cowell was one of the best attackers for a Saint Mary's attack that hit at a 0.288 clip over the three matches, with Cowell slamming down 31 kills. Saint Mary's only hit at over a 0.230 clip twice in the spring, but did so in all three matches to open the season. They were also strong at the net, averaging 2.4 blocks per set.
 
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
Saint Mary's takes on San Jose State for the first time since 2014 in a rare matchup between two Bay Area schools. The Spartans are 2-1 on the season after opening up the year at the Oregon Invitational, hosted by the Oregon Ducks. Their only loss of that tournament came at the hands of the Ducks in straight sets, but they did beat Santa Clara and Portland State. Latahevai Lousi has been on a tear to begin the season, with 42 kills to lead all Spartans. As a team, they already have 25 aces, and three players already have five or more (Yazmin Pitpit...5, Haylee Nelson...6, and Mia Schafer...7).
 
ABOUT SACRAMENTO STATE
The Hornets will be hosting Saint Mary's after a quick road match against San Jose State on Thursday night, their first time away from The Nest this season. The Hornets hosted the Hornet Invitational last weekend and beat UC Davis and San Francisco before falling to sixth-ranked Florida in straight sets to close out the weekend. Sacramento State has not had the attack success that the Gaels have had thus far (just 0.160 as a team), but Bridgette Smith has been carrying the load with 45 kills, nearly double that of the next closest teammate (Caitlin Volkmann, 24 kills).
