

GOLF | Spring Season Begins at Arizona Intercollegiate

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Golf starts up their spring season at the Arizona Intercollegiate this Monday and Tuesday at the Tucson Country Club in Tucson, Ariz. The tournament returns to the Tucson Country Club for the first time since 1992, and was held at Sewailo Golf Course in Tucson for the past eight years.
The format remains 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday, and fans can track the action via the tournament's GolfStat Link. Due to expected frost, day one's shotgun start will be delayed, as the teams will not tee off earlier than 9am.
THE LINEUP
The Gaels lineup for the tournament includes Michael Slesinski, Dylan VanderVeer, Mitchell Hoey, Ryan Hartanto, Kristian Bressum on the team score, and Connor Reis will participate as an individual.
THE FIELD
Along with the Gaels, the 2022 version of the Arizona Intercollegiate features host Arizona, Arkansas, Augusta, BYU, Cal, Duke, Iowa State, Loyola Marymount University, New Mexico, New Mexico State, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara, and the University of Texas El Paso.
ARIZONA INTERCOLLEGIATE HISTORY
The Gaels finished in 7th as a team in 2020 in Tucson, with Blake Hathcoat coming in 9th of 84 golfers.
In 2019 Saint Mary's finished third of 16 teams and shot 21-under during the two-day tournament, which ranks as the 10th-best team score in tournament history. The Gaels trailed only Arizona (37-under) and No. 11 Arizona State (34-under) on the team leaderboard and finished ahead of their WCC rivals No. 9 BYU and Loyola Marymount, who placed ninth and 11th, respectively.
The Gaels also finished ahead of two more ranked teams: No. 18 Texas A&M (t-4th) and No. 41 UCLA (t-6th). They finished 4th in 2018, again ahead of rival BYU in 5th.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels finished the fall season by hosting the SMC Invitational November 8-10 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Hoey inished second of 104 golfers at the 15th annual SMC Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course. The freshman out of De La Salle High challenged eventual winner Quim Vidal Mora of Nevada as Hoey held the top spot at points during the final day. Hoey would finish just three strokes out of first place with a 205 in three rounds on the par 71 course, to finish 8-under par for the tournament.
Fellow freshman Reis finished 2-under par and tied for ninth overall after shooting a 211 in the three rounds. Senior VanderVeer was also 7-under on par-fives and had 14 birdies on the tournament as he finished in the top 25 with a 213 to make par for the tournament. The Gaels as a team climbed back up to their day-one placing to finish sixth of 19 teams after finishing 2-under par as a group in round three.
