RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saint Mary's Women's Basketball will play their first road game of the season in their first ever match up with the Cal Baptist Lancers this Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
SMC dominated the fourth quarter against the Nevada Wolf Pack to take the season opener 67-58, in a UCU Pavilion packed with over a thousand sixth graders from the Antioch School District.
Similar to the season opener last season at Nevada, the Gaels erupted in the fourth, winning the final frame 20-8 to seal the victory. Taycee Wedin scored eight of her 10 points in the last quarter, hitting two three pointers and two free throws to go with the steady metronome throughout the game of Ali Bamberger, who had 14 points and 17 rebounds. It was another double-double for Bamberger, who racked up 10 of them last season.
Various members of the Gaels supporting cast took turns being the other scorer to keep the offense humming. Tayla Dalton was a spark plug again for Saint Mary's as she often was last season, scoring a team-leading six points in the opening quarter and five in the third.
It was Hannah Rapp and Clair Steele each with four points in the second quarter to buoy the SMC attack, though the Gaels trailed 34-33 at the half, even though they were shooting 54% from the field.

California Baptist University posted a second-consecutive 20-plus win season, closing out the season with a 23-9 overall record to go with a 13-5 conference record and a slew of milestones and benchmarks.
CBU finished its four-year transition period into Division I with a cumulative record of 83-37 and a winning percentage of 63.9. The Lancers' 83 wins rank as the fourth most among the 49 teams that have transitioned since 1997-98. Florida Gulf Coast tops the list with 100 victories, followed by South Dakota State (92) and Abilene Christian (84).
Trinity San Antonio was named to the Preseason All-WAC First Team, after a strong freshman season, playing in all 32 games with 15 starts, and averaging 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. She represented Team Puerto Rico in the 2022 FIBA Women's World Cup.
It's the first ever meeting between the two programs since Cal Baptist just began their transition to D-I in the 2017-18 season. SMC did host the Lancers at their 2021-22 Thanksgiving Classic, and CBU recorded big wins against Texas Christian and UC Santa Barbara.
