LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's Baseball came back from a 5-2 deficit by scoring three runs in the fifth to tie the game and five runs in the sixth to secure the 10-5 win at Cal on Tuesday night.
Christopher Campos gave the Gaels their first lead of the night with a solid base hit to left to go up 6-5. That was followed two batters later by a monster grand slam to deep right field off the top of the Edwards Stadium bleachers by
Christian Almanza to put the Gaels up 10-5 and SMC never looked back.
Saint Mary's used five different pitchers for the Tuesday night affair, with the best outing coming from Los Medanos College transfer
Connor Linchey, who threw three scoreless innings and got the win with just one walk and three strikeouts.
Jackson Hulett pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to close it out for the Gaels.
Campos went 4 for 6 and
Nathan Chong was 3 for 4 with each recording an RBI and two runs scored.
Chris Santiago and
Blake Mann both finished 2 for 4 and Espinoza was 2 for 5.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Saint Mary's will allow fans in for free this season to Gaels baseball games as construction on the new stadium seating will take place this season.
ABOUT BYU
Game one will be the 36th meeting between BYU and Saint Mary's. The Cougars are 25-10 all-time and have won the last six contests against the Gaels—the longest winning streak in series history. The first game between the two schools was played on March 14, 1969 and ended in a 12-4 Cougar victory.
BYU defeated Washington State of the Pac-12 on Tuesday at home, 9-3, and is now 11-0 on the year when scoring at least six runs. The Cougars played four games last week, posting back-to-back wins over Utah Valley (12-5) and No. 19 ranked Gonzaga (11-2), before dropping the final two games of the weekend series to the Bulldogs 6-3 and 9-4. BYU is 5-5 over its last 10 games.
With the win over WSU on Tuesday, BYU is 7-2 versus Power Five programs in 2022. BYU also has wins over then No. 6 Oklahoma State (8-6), Ohio State (9-6), Utah (10-3), and a program-first series sweep of Arizona State in Phoenix (4-2, 6-5, 19-3).
Offensively the Cougars are led by Brock Watkins, Ryan Sepede, Mitch McIntyre and Jacob Wilk. Watkins leads the team in total bases (38) and batting average (.320), while McIntyre is tied with Watkins for the team lead in hits (24) and leads the Cougars in walks (16) and OBP (.442). Sepede is the Cougars RBI leader (23) and is second in batting average (.307) and total bases (36).
