SANTA MONICA, Calif. — In the final day of the 2022 West Coast Conference Championship, Saint Mary's Beach Volleyball began play against Santa Clara. These two teams met in the final week of the regular season in Moraga and Saint Mary's won the match 4-1 for their best win over the Broncos during the year. The tables turned on Saturday, however, as the Broncos were able to win the final flight of the match to clinch a 3-2 win over Saint Mary's, ending the Gaels season, while the Broncos move on to the third-place match. The Gaels end the season with a 16-18 record.
After dropping the opening match in the top flight, Saint Mary's came roaring back with a pair of wins in the twos and fours to take a 2-1 lead overall. Jasmin Suarez and Jennifer "Boo" Laird were able to blow past Elena Radeff and Alexie Epstein of Santa Clara 21-15 and 21-5, with the latter set being their largest win of the season. In the fours, Aeriel Sundt and Hawley took down Sophia Tulino and Casey Campbell 21-12 and 21-17. With two matches in tow, Saint Mary's looked like they were in a good position to take the match.
The fives and threes went to Santa Clara as they wrapped up the match, but both wound up going the distance. Ella Sandt and Genevieve Bane won the first set in the fives 21-18, lost the second set, and then fell 15-8 in the third set, tying the match up at 2-2 overall. Meanwhile in the threes, Karmin Brown and Makenna Joyce won their opening set 21-15, but then suffered two narrow defeats (21-17, 15-13) to mark the end of the Saint Mary's season.
