FRIDAY FIVE – April 8

FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.

1. BEATING BYU
Saint Mary's Baseball scored a big series win one week ago when they took down BYU at home to begin the month of April. The Gaels walked it off with a three-run ninth inning in game of the series before holding on in the finale on Saturday for a 4-3 win. It marks the first series win for Saint Mary's against BYU since the 2018 season, when the Gaels swept BYU at Louis Guisto Field.

2. LONG WEEKEND
Speaking of baseball at Louis Guisto, the Gaels will be at home for four-straight games beginning on Friday afternoon. Saint Mary's hosts Pepperdine in a three-game series over the weekend before welcoming in Cal for a Monday afternoon game. The Gaels have been awfully strong at home this season, sporting an 8-2 record in home games.

3. CONSISTENT KOZYREVA
Mariia Kozyreva was named the WCC's Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after yet another strong showing over the weekend. "Masha" defeated the No. 9 player in the country Shiori Fukuda 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) by taking the final set in a tiebreaker on Saturday's final match at Pepperdine. The Saint-Petersburg, Russia native is 20-5 on the season and is currently ranked No. 49 in the country.

4. GOING TO VIRGINIA
Saint Mary's Golf embarks on their longest trip of the season as they head to the University of Virginia for the Lewis Chitengwa Invitational. This is the first tournament for the Gaels since The Goodwin at Stanford to close out the month of March. Play begins on Monday, April 11 and the Gaels will stay on the East Coast following the event when they golf in the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State, the following weekend.

5. TIME FOR THE TOREROS
Saint Mary's Softball begins West Coast Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against the San Diego Toreros. The Gaels will play five conference series over the next five weekends, with two of those coming at home. SMC will look to improve on their fourth-place finish in the conference standings behind the arm of Sofia Earle, who ranks near the top of the WCC in strikeouts and earned run average.
