MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball held the potent Nevada offense in check for the first half of Tuesday's game before the Wolfpack hit four solo home runs for a 5-1 win over the Gaels at Louis Guisto Field.
Â
SMC got out into, and out of, a first-inning jam.
Ryan Sanders started the game and walked three batters but also struck out two.
Nathan Schneider came in out of the bullpen and ended the bases-loaded situation with one pitch on a grounder to short.
Â
Schneider would go on to pitch three more innings allowing just one hit with no walks and four strikeouts. The Wolfpack would get their first run on a sac fly after a wild pitch by
Preston Howey allowed a runner who doubled to advance to third.
Â
Nevada would cushion their lead with back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings from the heart of their order to go up 5-0.
Â
Saint Mary's got on the board when
Coleman Schmidt pinch hit to start the bottom of the seventh by driving a ball over the right field fence for his first home run of the season. They would get two more runners on that inning after
Seth Nager was hit by a pitch and
Blake McDonald walked, but the Wolfpack managed to retire
Gavin Napier to end the inning.
Â
A pair of walks from
Dalton Mashore and Nager in the ninth gave the Gaels a chance to close in on the Wolfpack, but Nevada struck out
Javy Espinoza who pinch hit for Napier to end the game.
