SB | Garnett’s 2005 SFSU Team to be Inducted into Gators Hall of Fame

SAN FRANCISCO — Saint Mary's Softball head coach Sonja Garnett is set to be inducted into the San Francisco State Athletics Hall of Fame for the second time. Already a member for individual performance as a student-athlete, Garnett will also be inducted along with her 2005 Gators Softball team.

"I am honored and excited that our team is being inducted into the San Francisco State Hall of Fame," said Garnett. "What our team accomplished in 2005 was truly remarkable, especially given our limited funding and the threat of athletics being cut. We had talent and worked hard, but what made us successful was playing for each other and having a common goal."

The 2005 San Francisco State softball program is still the winningest in Gators history, going 43-21 overall. They won the NCAA Western Regional for the first time in program history and finished fifth at the NCAA DII National Championships. Garnett was one of the standouts of the team, earning First Team All-America honors from the NFCA while the coaching staff took home Western Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The Gators set team records for shutouts (20), fewest runs allowed (121), fewest doubles allowed (42), and lowest team earned run average (1.36).

Garnett closed out her SF State career as the leader in every significant stat category for the Gators. She holds program records in games pitched (188), wins (103), innings pitched (1068.2), complete games (127), strikeouts (609), and earned run average (0.96). She has been inducted into the SFSU Athletics Hall of Fame individually, and is also in the CCAA Hall of Fame.

"I cannot wait to reunite with these women and celebrate our time on the field together," Garnett mentioned. "I am grateful for the many lessons I learned that year that I still apply to coaching (and life) today."

The 2005 Gators Softball team will be inducted along with Naveed Bagheri (2008-13, wrestling), Garry Bradford (1970-72, men's basketball), Joe Garrity (1977-81, football), Emily Manwaring (1979-84, women's basketball coach), Dr. Michael J. Simpson (1985-2013, baseball coach, director of athletics), and Iris Tolenada (2009-13, volleyball).

The induction ceremony for the San Francisco State Athletics Hall of Fame will take place on Sunday, September 18 at 11:00 am in the Student Life Events Center on the campus of SF State.
