NEW YORK — The NBA G-League held its annual draft this past weekend, and Gael great
Logan Johnson was selected ninth overall by the Oklahoma City Blue. Johnson will join fellow Gaels Patty Mills, Jock Landale and Jordan Ford in playing professional basketball in the United States this season.
Johnson spent four years as a point guard on the Gael roster after transferring from Cincinnati. Whether on offense or defense, the Mountain View native always seemed to make plays for the Gaels. In 114 games (90 starts) for Saint Mary's, he averaged 10.6 points per contest and shot 44.1% from the field. On the defensive side of the ball, Johnson was relentless, forcing turnovers at an extremely high rate, including 151 steals, good for fourth most in program history. Following his outstanding 2022-23 campaign, Johnson was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a Lou Henson All-American.
Following his time at Saint Mary's, Johnson spent this past Summer in a Spurs uniform during the NBA Summer League. He appeared in two games, for the Spurts, including a 98-94 victory over the Thunder that might have caught the eye of the OKC front office. Johnson is the first Saint Mary's player drafted into the G-League since Tron Smith in 2011.
