INDIANAPOLIS — As just announced by the US Basketball Writers Association,
Mitchell Saxen has been honored as one of this week's five Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week. Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
Saxen picked up career-high totals in points (23) and rebounds (16) in the Gaels double overtime victory over UNLV in Phoenix this past weekend. Saxen scored every single point of the double overtime frame, including the game winning layup as time expired in the 69-67 thriller. Saxen is the first Gael since Jock Landale to earn National Player of the Week honors. Landale did it in 2017.Â
Saxen and the Gaels will host three home games this week, beginning tonight as they get set to square off with Middle Tennessee at 7 PM.
