WBB | Gaels Battle the Spartans for Their Last Non-Conference Game

MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's Women's Basketball will compete in their last non-conference game of the season at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29 against San Jose State before beginning WCC play in the new year.
 
The Gaels have an 11-0 all time record against San Jose State, since they first battled against each other in 1988. This will be the third year in a row that the teams will go head to head, making this the longest consecutive match up between the Gaels and the Spartans. In nine out of 11 games, the Gaels have been able to put up over 79 points against the SJSU.

LAST TIME OUT
SMC struggled in the first quarter against Denver missing open opportunities and found themselves trailing by 11 going into the second quarter. The momentum shifted to the Gaels in the second quarter with an 11-0 run. 
 
The third quarter featured seven lead changes and five ties. Taylor Dalton converted a three-point play for the Gaels and put Saint Mary's up 48-45 in the final minute of the third quarter. 
 
In the fourth SMC went up 57-49 with 6:27 to go on back-to-back jumpers from Zeryhia Aokuso. With 2:14 remaining, the Pioneers cut Saint Mary's lead to only four points. Aokuso delivered again for the Gaels with a layup, pushing their lead to six. With just over a minute left, Denver cut the lead back down to four, but the Gaels played keep away to run the clock down with offensive rebounds. Dalton hit a pair of free-throws to put away the game for the Gaels for their second two-game win streak of the season. 
 
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
SJSU finished their 2022-2023 season in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference, losing to Wyoming 72-57. The Spartans bring on six new players for the 2023-2024 season, five freshmen and one senior. Freshman Jyah LoVett, is San Jose's leading scorer with 126 points, 30 assists, and 27 steals. In high school, she scored 61 points in a game being the 18th player in California State history to score at least 60 points in one game. 
 
Following LoVett is the Junior Amhyia Moreland. Moreland transferred from Old Dominion after her freshman year and joined San Jose in the 2022-2023 season. Last season she appeared in 30 games, 10 starts, and scored a season high of 11 points against Fresno State. This season, she has put up 123 points, 15 blocks, and 10 assists as a Spartan.
