ROW | Gaels Head Back to Sacramento for Hornet Invite
3/17/2023 8:33:00 AM | Women's Rowing
MORAGA, Calif. – After posting a second-place finish at the Sacramento State Invite last weekend, the Saint Mary's Women Rowing team head back to Sacramento for the Hornet Invite on this upcoming Saturday.
THE DETAILS
Hornet Invite
Saturday, March 18 – 12 PM
Lake Natoma – Sacramento, Calif.
LAST TIME OUT
With rain battering down all across Northern California, Saint Mary's rowing moved from Lake Natoma to the Port of Sacramento on Saturday for the Sacramento State Invite. With calmer conditions there, the Gaels were able to muscle their way to two second place finishes on the day, facing a lot of regional competition that they will be seeing more of as the season progresses.
In what goes in the books are their first official competition of the spring semester, the Gaels came out and earned a second place finish in the first varsity eight boat with a time of 7:03.3, a great time considering they were racing against the tide and with a slight crosswind. The Gaels second varsity eight boat finished with a time of 7:31.2, and in the varsity four race, the Gaels were second with a time of 8:34.2.
When looking at those results compared to how the Gaels did last year in the same event, the times are dramatically improved. SMC shaved off 27 seconds from last year in their 1v8+ boat, 18 seconds in the 2v8+ boat, and an impressive 42 seconds in their 1v4+ boat.
Gaels head coach Brian Ebke was thrilled with how his team performed, "Today was a great day of racing and learning for our team. We were excited to get ahead of conference rival Portland in the 1V8+ and the 1V4+ and get some valuable racing experience for a young 2V8+ that has shown a lot of upside. Our athletes did a great job managing a challenging few days with weather and race venue changes. Sac State put on a great race considering all the logistical challenges and we're looking forward to heading back to Sacramento next weekend to test our speed against some strong out of conference teams."
