HOUSTON, Texas — After being named finalists for postseason awards, both Logan Johnson and Aidan Mahaney were named All-Americans through various outlets. Johnson was named a Lou Henson All-American and Mahaney was named a Kyle Macy Freshman All-American. These awards were announced in conjunction with major awards prior to the start of the Final Four.
Logan Johnson was named the WCC's Defensive Player of the Year for the first time in his career, getting recognition for being one of the best defensive players in the country. Johnson 151 steals as a Gael, the fourth most in program history, and led the team with 55 this year. Those numbers helped him become a Lou Henson Award finalist, given to the best mid-major player in the country. He also has set a career-best in rebounding average at 5.0 per game. His all-around game has improved in his fifth collegiate season, leading the Gaels in points per game (14.5), assists (125), and free throws (107).
Johnson is the first Gael to be named a Lou Henson All-American since Jock Landale in 2018. Johnson also was named First Team All-District by the USBWA just prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament.
Aidan Mahaney racked up a host of accolades during his first season. He was named First Team All-WCC as a freshman, which also puts him on the All-Freshman team in the conference. This puts Mahaney in rare air, joining Patty Mills as the only other Gael to be named to the All-WCC team as a freshman. He was the leading scorer for a freshman in the conference (13.9 points per game), a rank that finished top-15 in the entire NCAA. He owns the second-most 20-point games by a Saint Mary's freshman, again behind Mills, and ended the season shooting 40% from beyond the arc. That put Mahaney as one of four freshmen in the NCAA averaging over 13 points per game and shooting over 40% from three-point range.
Mahaney is the first Gael ever to be named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-American team. He is the only player in the West Coast Conference to land on that list at the end of the season.
